"The Fourth Crusade" is essential reading for anyone who has tried to make sense of a momentous historical event that seems to defy rational explanation, or for those who simply conclude that Constantinople fell victim to the Crusaders' greed. The reality is much more complex, though "The Fourth Crusade" manages to present its analysis in an entertaining and engaging manner that brings to life a period of history like no other.

    politics and modern turkey

Turkey Unveiled : A History of Modern Turkey ~ Usually ships in 24 hours Hugh Pope, Nicole Pope / Hardcover / Published 1999 Our Price: $20.97 ~ You Save: $8.98 (30%) ...the Popes have written a deeply revealing guide to modern Turkish culture and politics that fills a wide gap in general knowledge. It is also a brave and at times an ironic book.-- The New York Times Book Review, Robert D. Kaplan

Turkey, write journalists Nicole and Hugh Pope in this well-made narrative history, is a land that defies easy categorization, a melange of elements "European, Western, Eastern, Islamic, fascistic, anarchic" that has always been something of an enigma to outsiders. The nation, the authors write, is now the arena of conflict between left and right, fundamentalist and secularist, nationalist and cosmopolitan: it stands at a crossroads both political and historical. Westerners, they suggest, would do well to pay closer attention to Turkish affairs, and their book is a fine contribution toward that end. --Gregory McNamee

Splendors of Istanbul : Houses and Palaces Along the Bosporus ~ Ships in 2-3 daysChris Hellier, Francesco Venturi (Photographer) / Hardcover / Published 1993 Our Price: $52.50 ~ You Save: $22.50 (30%) Travel books all urge the tourist in Istanbul to take a ferry ride up the Bosporus, the waterway dividing the European and Asian parts of the city. This book not only helps in identifying the palaces and villas that line the water but takes us inside them. Some well-known public buildings, such as Topkapi and the Dolmabahce Palace, are shown, but most interesting are the interiors of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century wooden villas that were originally built as summer getaways, often by Greeks, Russians, or Egyptians. As European influences became more dominant in the waning years of the empire, so too did European styles of architecture and interior decoration. More than 200 color photographs

Knopf Guide Istanbul and Northwest Turkey (Knopf Guides) ~ Usually ships in 24 hoursPaperback / Published 1993 Our Price: $20.00 ~ You Save: $5.00 (20%) Customers review: the best on Istanbul
The maps are the most useful of any of the Istanbul travel books I have seen; although this book gives history and analysis, it is not too in depth, as the Knopf book can be, so that you lose sight of where you are. The tours laid out in this book contain references to small cafes and shops and restaurants that none of the others do. It is a 1998 version so is very up-to-date. Excellent book.
